The Secrets >> Su per la scala abbandonata
Su per la scala abbandonata
|
Even Giotto's Campanile has its secret staircase. It is the one used originally which was then abandoned, and it led to the first floors. It was used by the clrgymen when the door onto the square did't work yet and access to the Campanile was possible only through the Cathedral, with a wooden foot-bridge situated at a hight of 4.7 metres. The first document to testify the existence of the passage is a deliberation of the 26th of December 1397 on some works to be done "subtus arcum et voltam"(under the arch and the vault). The bridge was mostly used by those who had to ring the bells. But in 1431 it was already useless and unsafe.By now one entered the Campanile through the door.So the passage was demolished, whilst the two arches next to the entrances were restored.During the demolition of the bridge the sepulchre of the Ferrantini family, which was directly underneath, was damaged. The authotities decided to have it restored..
After opening an iron gate,we go up an old staircase, following the winding route that the clerics followed to enter the Campanile, ring the bells and go back to the Cathedral.Ups and downs that led to the same entrance that the demolished bridge led to.Looking out of the opening we see in front of us,to the right, the walled entrance on the other side, where the bridge led to the Cathedral. From this it is clear hat the wooden passage wasn't straight but slightly diagonal.Perhaps it was covered.
We go back using the abandoned staircase, down to the point where the official staircase, opened to the public, starts. It's been a plunge back in time.
